Facebook has been adding video to every part of its social media platform. Today, Facebook is introducing instant videos into its Messenger platform, which makes switching from a text chat to video chat easier than ever before.
The new feature being rolled out starting today will only be available to Facebook’s Messenger app on iOS and Android. “Instant Video is a reflection of the ubiquity of video. With Instant Video, you can bring your conversations to life in the most authentic way — seamlessly and instantly,” Facebook said in a blog post.
Facebook Messenger’s Instant Video is an option to add video to an existing text chat so that the conversation can have richer communication experience. The service can be accessed with the tap of an icon in the top right corner of the app. With Facebook Instant Videos, the audio is off by default because Facebook thinks “sometimes you just need to see something, not hear it.”
The service is different from video calling and ideal when you are chatting with a friend and would like to show only the environment around and not the audio playing in the background. The instant video inside Messenger is only available to peer-to-peer chat and may become available to group chats one day.
Facebook Messenger currently has over 1 billion monthly active users and since it believes videos is the next growth driver, the instant video looks like an useful addition. The instant video will be available to both android and iOS users having updated app on their smartphone.
