Could this be the royal wedding of the year?

Shehu of Borno Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi

History was made on Saturday, October 29, 2016 as the daughter of the Emir of Daura Farouk Umar Farouk got married to the son of the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi in Daura, Katsina state.

The wedding between Hajia Nafisatu and Abba was presided over by the Chief Imam of Daura, Alhaji Safiyanu Yusuf, at 12.30pm at the Emir of Daura’s palace.

The marriage which was described as unprecedented in the history of Daura by the uncle of the bride, Alhaji Lawal Aminu, because of the magnitude of guests who trooped into the ancient city to witness the wedding has all trappings of royalty.

The groom’s father, the Shehu of Borno and the mother stayed in Daura for three days for the wedding. This is strange to the Hausa culture as both parents of the couple does not necessarily ave to be present during the wedding of their children especially as a royal father.

Aminu said that in his over 66 years, he had never seen a marriage that had attracted so many people to the ancient town of Daura like that marriage. Guests that witnessed the wedding from Borno were put at between 500 and 1000 people.

Emir of Daura’s daughter Hajia Nafisatu

The marriage is likened to what Bayajida, the son of the King of Baghdad, capital of Iraq, did when he came to Borno from Baghdad and ended up in Daura where he married Daurama, the Queen of Daura hundreds of years ago.

Among the dignitaries that witnessed the wedding were the governors of Katsina state Aminu Masari and the Bauchi state counterpart Mohammed Abubakar among many others.

The bride had since moved in to her husband’s house in Maiduguri, Borno state since Sunday, October 30.
